New Beginnings

My wife and kids reading before bedLately, my two-year old son has been showing an interest in reading the Bible. The other day, he saw me reading mine on the couch and came running up with a little yellow bible from his bookshelf.

I put him on my lap and opened his bible to a chapter in Numbers…probably not the best place to start for a first impression, but I figured he wouldn’t understand it anyway and that’s what I had been reading. His attention only lasted about 30 seconds, and then he tried pulling the bible away from me, saying “I will read, I will read!” So I let him take it and went back to reading my own bible.

The cool thing is, he brought his bible back to me later that night and wanted to read again for about 30 seconds. I read him a few verses in Proverbs about wisdom, and noticed that he was actually listening to me. The next day, he brought me his bible again and asked to read it.

So, today I started a devotional reading plan for Luke on my YouVersion account. My goal is to read a verse with him every day, and eventually discuss them in a meaningful way. For now, I’m happy to just spend 30 seconds a day reading with him on my lap. I’ve also decided to write more often; taking notes as I read through the bible and writing occasional blog entries on this site. My intention there is to establish a theology and worldview that is consistent with God’s truth – a pursuit I hope my kids will learn to imitate.

This is the first post, then, of what I hope will be many. And to start things off, I thought I’d share the first passage Luke and I read as part of our father-son reading plan. Psalm 1.1-3:

1 How happy is the man
who does not follow the advice of the wicked
or take the path of sinners
or join a group of mockers!

2 Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction,
and he meditates on it day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted beside streams of water
that bears its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

Amen, and may the words of the Psalmist be true in Luke’s life!
